Graduate students can apply for Graduate Assistantships and audition for scholarships, as well as receive University financial aid.
The School of Music holds annual in-person scholarship auditions during Winter Quarter for admission to our programs the following academic year. Each year, approximately 100 scholarships are awarded to incoming and continuing students. To receive scholarship funds, you must be accepted into the School of Music and be a full-time student. Scholarships are open only to music majors.
Scholarship auditions generally take place during late January and early February. For this year's audition dates are posted here. To schedule an audition, please contact the Admissions & Outreach Coordinator, Jenni Cole or (206) 685-9872. You MUST submit your application to the UW before you can schedule an audition.
If you live more than 1,000 miles from Seattle, you may send a videotape or DVD recording of your audition (audio recordings will NOT be accepted). Recordings must be postmarked by January 15th to ensure consideration.
Graduate Assistantships are available in conducting, music history, music theory and ear-training, vocal and piano instruction, accompanying, jazz, world music, ethnomusicology, popular music, computer music, and music education. Please note that your completed application and assistantship application must be postmarked no later than December 15th.
The School of Music has several Work-Study positions available, in areas such as accompanying, research and teaching, library services, reading for music history courses, and office assisting. Work-study applicants should contact the UW Work Study Office at (206) 685-1985 and Douglas Mathews, School of Music Administrator, at (206) 543-2137.
Research and teaching assistantships for graduate students are offered by the School of Music in theory, ear training, music history, music education, piano, voice, conducting, and ethnomusicology. The assistantship application postmark deadline is December 15, 2008 for the 2008-2009 academic year. Applications are available by clicking here: TA Application (pdf file).
All students who need financial assistance should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is due February 15th for priority consideration. This form is essential if you want to be considered for non-music aid. The Office of Student Financial Aid also has more information on ways to help pay for college.
