So, you want to study music?

Then you're in luck! The School of Music at the University of Washington is a comprehensive professional school offering both performance- and research-oriented degree programs. Our approximately 500 music students pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees in music, and they go on to experience rich professional and personal lives in music. Here at the UW, we study music in two ways -- music as a creative art, and music as a branch of the humanities.

This website will introduce you to the School of Music's location, facilities, performance groups, undergraduate and graduate programs, and faculty, and we will give you all the information you need to apply to the School of Music.

UW's Campus

The University of Washington is located northeast of the center of Seattle and overlooks Lake Washington and the Cascade Mountains. It sits near the shores of the beautiful Puget Sound, which runs all the way to Canada. This setting provides a quiet atmosphere for study and easy access to the vibrant city of Seattle.

With 40,000 students, the University of Washington is like a city within a city. The campus has its own residences, restaurants, entertainment... even its own police force! Just outside of campus, you can also find a plethora of things to do -- check out University Way (affectionately referred to as "The Ave") for funky shops and delicious food, and zip over to University Village for upscale shopping.

Seattle's Music Scene

Seattle may be the home of grunge rock, but opportunities to hear and participate in other genres of music abound. In fact, Seattle is said to have more per-capita live performances than any city in the country besides New York! With the Seattle Opera, Seattle Symphony, Northwest Chamber Orchestra, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Experience Music Project, and more than 100 other chamber groups, orchestras, choirs, theaters, and dance companies, Seattle is bustling with music and culture. In addition, Seattle presents the famous Folklife, Bumbershoot, Seattle Film, Seattle Chamber Music, and Northwest Mahler Festivals each year.

Performances at the School of Music

The School of Music presents over 150 concerts and recitals each year, including performances by ensembles, student soloists, faculty, and guest artists, plus two full opera productions. Outstanding student composers and performers are featured in special performances, and students have the opportunity to participate in master classes with distinguished guest artists. World music is performed and taught by visiting artists from around the world through the Ethnomusicology department.
