Application to the School of Music is a two-step process: one, you must apply to the University of Washington, and two, you must audition for the School of Music.
- International Students (Summer and Autumn quarters only): January 15
- Undergraduate Priority Scholarship Consideration: December 1
- Freshmen: January 15
- Transfer Students & Post-Bacs: February 15
It is extremely important that all of your application materials, including test scores, are postmarked by the application deadline. If you turn in materials late, we may not be able to review your application!
Your application to the UW consists of two main parts: background information and a personal statement. We also require test scores from most applicants. You can find the online application and detailed information about what materials are required for you at http://admit.washington.edu/Apply. At this page, you'll find links to an application procedure based on what kind of applicant you are: freshman, international, transfer, or post-baccalaureate. Follow the directions carefully, and please ask if you have any questions!
Once you have submitted your application to the UW, you can schedule your audition. We have two kinds of auditions:
- Scholarship auditions: These auditions are for applicants who want to major in music. You will be auditioning for entrance into the School of Music AND for scholarships. Audition repertoire for these auditions are available here: http://www.music.washington.edu/advising/scholarship_rep.php.
- Entrance auditions: These auditions are for applicants who do not want to be considered for scholarships OR are just interested in taking lessons with a member of our faculty. You do NOT need to audition to minor in music. Audition repertoire for these auditions are available here: http://www.music.washington.edu/advising/audition_rep.php.
If you live more than 1000 miles away, you can submit an audition tape instead. To schedule your audition, contact Jenni Cole at jcole2@u.washington.edu or 206-685-9872. There is no separate application for the School of Music. To be considered for audition, all you need to do is audition!
Now comes the scary part: waiting to hear back from us! The UW and the School of Music will send out their decisions separately, so you might hear about the results of your application and audition at two different times. You have to get into BOTH the UW and the School of Music to declare a music major.
