The University of Washington Vocal Jazz Ensemble 1 was formed in 1975 by
Kirby Shaw. Made up of undergraduate and graduate students from throughout the
University community, repertoire for this ensemble includes challenging
arrangements of current SATB vocal jazz literature, with focus on arrangements
from the “Great American Songbook”. Entrance to UW Vocal Jazz 1 is based on
successful completion of the audition, as well as the following factors: strong vocal
technique; sight-singing abilities; and willingness to work together to obtain the
highest possible musical standards.

• Performances include one Vocal Jazz Night each quarter, a Vocal Jazz Solo Night(Spring Quarter), and other community performances
