Nancy Sung-Won Jang was born in Seoul, Korea. She received her DMA in Piano Performance from the University of Washington, studying with Professor Craig Sheppard. She earned bachelor and master degrees in Music at the UW under the tutelage of Neal O’Doan. She has recently received coaching from renowned pianist and pedagogue Bela Siki.
Jang has been the recipient of many awards, winning the UW Concerto Competition, Puget Sound Concerto Award, Ladies Musical Club Competition, Foster/Milnor Roberts Scholarship, the Brechemin Scholarship, Beethoven Club Competition, the Pacific International Piano Competition, Helen Crowe Snelling Award, Puget Sound Concert Award, and others.
She has performed in many major concert venues in Northwest, among them Meany Hall, the Frye Museum, and the Seattle Public Library. As a first-place winner of the Ladies Musical Club Competition, Jang presented a ‘Debut Tour’ through Western Washington state.
During her study at University of Washington, Jang also studied the organ for three years with Professor Carol Terry. During those years, Dr. Jang gave two solo organ recitals at St. Mark’s Cathedral and won an American Guild of Organists Scholarship. She has also been active as a church organist/conductor for more than ten years.
Jang performs extensively as a soloist and collaborative pianist, and maintains an active teaching studio in Eastside. Her piano teaching is based on Dalcroze method, about which she wrote her doctoral dissertation.
A demanding competition judge, Jang has adjudicated for Snohomish County Adjudication and Kitsap County State Conference Competition, among others. She also was one of the judges for the Everett and Port Gardner Bay Orchestra Competition in 2006. In 2009, she will adjudicate for the Edmonds Chapter, Bellevue Music Festival, and Kitsap County State Conference Competition.
