Frequently Asked Questions
Undergraduate Program

What is a Music Education major at the University of Washington?

The Music Education program at the UW leads to a combined Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Music degree for undergraduate majors. Upon completion of full-time student teaching, both undergraduates and post-baccalaureate students will become certified to teach music (grades K-12) in the State of Washington upon completion of the program.

Are there different types of Music Education degrees?

No, however students do elect either a vocal or instrumental concentration. Regardless of concentration, all Music Education majors take coursework in teaching music in the elementary grades.

How can I become a Music Education major?

Students may become a Music Education major by passing the Music Education Entrance Exam/Audition. These are held twice a year, at the end of Spring quarter and just prior to the beginning of Fall quarter.

When can I take the Entrance Exam?

You can take the Entrance Exam only after being admitted to the UW School of Music. Often, students choose to be examined upon entrance to the UW as freshmen or transfers. You do not have to wait until just prior to commencing coursework in Music Education. However, you must successfully pass the Entrance Exam before enrolling for Music Education classes.

Is there any advantage to taking the Entrance Exam sooner rather than later?

Yes. First, immediately upon being accepted into the Music Education program, you will be assigned an adviser on the Music Education faculty. Your adviser can help you in selecting courses and planning schedules that may better prepare you for your work in education. Second, even though you might be a year or two away from beginning Music Education courses, there are other music courses required as part of the major that you may consider scheduling immediately.

Can I take the School of Music Audition and the Music Education Entrance Exam together?

Yes and no. Each of these auditions is a separate evaluation conducted by different members of the School of Music faculty. It is not possible to combine them into one audition. However, in the Fall, since both auditions are often held during the same week, it is perfectly acceptable to sign up for both. If possible, be sure to schedule your Music Education Exam after the School of Music Audition.

Is it possible to pass the School of Music audition but not the Music Education Entrance Exam?

Yes. Some musically qualified students may not meet the entry requirements for preparation as teachers of elementary and secondary school music. A combination of performance, general musical knowledge and communication skills are fundamental to further training as teachers of music.

Can I re-take the Music Education Entrance Exam?

Yes. There is no limit to the number of times an individual may audition. You are welcome to meet with music education faculty members to receive feedback on your entrance exam to assist you in preparation for subsequent auditions.

Is it possible to enter the Music Education program as a non-music major?

No. Acceptance to the UW School of Music is a prerequisite for all Music Education majors.

What sorts of things are on the Music Education Entrance Exam?

All prospective Music Education majors will be asked to demonstrate abilities in two areas:

  • Performance on your principal instrument or voice of a prepared accompanied piece (an accompanist will be provided);
  • Verbal responses to questions relevant to your interests in music teaching and learning among children and adolescents.

You will also be asked to:

  • Sight-sing and/or sight-read unfamiliar melodies;
  • Perform a simple song and a simple harmonic accompaniment on piano (prior piano performance experience is not expected).

These last two items are mostly diagnostic in nature. Students less experienced in piano or aural skills will have ample opportunity to develop competencies in these areas during the course of the program.

How many years of study does the Music Education program require?

Once you have passed the Entrance Exam and begun your Music Education coursework, it is possible to complete the program in two full years.

How can I find out more information?

The best way to obtain further information about the program is to make an appointment with a music education faculty member through the Music Education Office. Faculty members are always happy to answer any questions or concerns about becoming a major. Additionally, an information meeting for prospective music education majors is held every year during the Spring quarter. And finally, for a student perspective on music education, the UW chapter of the Collegiate Music Educators National Conference (CMENC) has regular meetings which you are welcome to attend.
